Peihua Reinke, Guidance Counselor at Silver Lake Intermediate School, and Lisa Dawes, OASD Director of Student Services, will visit Xiamen City, China, where more than 2,000 delegates from around the world will attend a prestigious awards ceremony for the Confucius Classroom of the Year International Award. The Oconomowoc Area School District (OASD) has been selected as a candidate for this award. OASD is one of only three school districts in the U.S., and one of 100 schools worldwide, to be nominated. Only five awards are given worldwide.
The award recognizes model Mandarin Chinese Language and Culture Programs worldwide. “The official announcement is forthcoming,” said Peihua Reinke. “To be selected for this award is like being recognized by the White House! It is a worldwide recognition of our commitment to Chinese Language Education.”
The OASD was nominated because of its commitment to:
- teaching Chinese in elementary, middle, and high school
- facilitating and involvement in the education and training of Chinese teachers provided by Asia Society and Hanban
- implementing Chinese language and culture courses for the local community
- supporting Chinese cultural activities, events and competitions through integrating with other subject areas
“This is an opportunity that puts our district on the global stage and many school districts can only dream to have the chance,” said Peihua Reinke. “Opportunities like this come once in a lifetime. This is a great achievement that all of our staff, students, school board and the community should be very proud of!”
