Set in the Depression era at the Footlights Club in New York City, a bevy of young actresses, dancers, singers and musicians live and work and struggle to make it onto the Great White Way.Terry Randall, a headstrong and witty Midwestern gal, is determined to create her own destiny and get on the Broadway stage. Jean Maitland finds herself in the midst of the artistic battle of the day as she considers a movie contract in Hollywood over the toughing it out on the NYC boards. Kaye Hamilton pays the ultimate price for her desire to succeed. And there are so many girls with their very own stories to keep us guessing. Gentlemen callers come and go including playwrights, producers and wealthy visitors to NYC who just want a pretty girl on their arm. Considered "a valentine to the legitimate stage," George Kaufman & Edna Ferber's witty, fast-paced and poignant play is an important marker in American stage history.
