On October 12, 2021, the freshman class of Oconomowoc High School participated in an annual day of service throughout the Oconomowoc area. By engaging in a service project, students can learn a lot about their strengths and potential careers that may interest them.
We support each individual student's preparation to be career-ready and empower them to pursue postsecondary training through military service, the workforce, an apprenticeship, or through a 2 or 4-year college degree. Students took time out of the traditional school day for a readiness experience that promotes our school's mission and values, while helping each Raccoon develop a sense of identity and purpose.
Hunger Task Force
Students traveled to the Hunger Task Force warehouse in Milwaukee where they packed stock boxes for senior citizens. Students wrote greeting cards to go with each box. During their work, students also learned about nutrition, the stock box system, and hunger in the Milwaukee area. The Oconomowoc freshman service team set a new record for Hunger Task Force volunteers, packing 468 boxes during their session, which means that 468 families are fed.
Neighborhood House Nature Center
Students spent the day outdoors at the Neighborhood House Nature Center in Neosho, WI. They worked on identifying and harvesting native prairie seeds to be sent to Milwaukee to create natural gardens, set out Tree Frog Survey Collection Systems, and hiked and explored the Nature Center.
Assembling Care Packages for Troops and Veterans
Local veterans visited students at OHS to talk about the needs in our community and among active service members throughout the world. They collected donated items, filled care packages for troops, and wrote letters of support and encouragement to both active service members and veterans.
Make a House a Home
Students partnered with Oconomowoc Junior Woman's Club's Family of the Month Project. They made artwork for local families transitioning out of homelessness to fill their new homes as they get back on their feet.
In addition to these service projects, students also participated in activities like:
- A sing-along for seniors
- A youth sports camp that collected donated food
- Cleaning up the beach in downtown Oconomowoc
- A sewing bee creating reusable bags that eliminate plastic waste
- Creating and illustrating children's books that will be translated into Spanish for kids in Guatemala
- Baking treats and creating cards that were dropped off for front-line workers and the local police force, and more.
Our freshmen are dedicated to serving their community while learning life skills and lessons and being grounded in their purpose.
