Four Oconomowoc High School students shared their experiences at Badger Boys State and Badger Girls State with the Oconomowoc Rotary this week. The Oconomowoc Rotary helped sponsor these students in their week-long, mock-government and leadership experience. "We went from strangers to friends, and friends to brothers," said Nick S., about his experience. "We learned the value of profound connections," said Malik S., who was also elected as Governor of "Badger" during the 2018 Badger Boys State. "We got together with people who were just as committed as we were," said Mia R., of her time at Badger Girls State. Clair V., added that she gained confidence in expressing her opinions through the program.

Our Oconomowoc High School Wind Symphony had the amazing opportunity to perform with guest artist, Megumi Kanda, on Tuesday. Kanda is Principal Trombonist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and she joined the Wind Symphony on stage for their concert. The Nature Hill and Silver Lake Intermediate Encore Bands also shared the stage and enjoyed Ms. Kanda's performance.

Personal goals were achieved and hurdles were overcome. It was so exciting to witness all of the emotions that came along with some girls' final races of the season. On Saturday evening the OHS Girls Volleyball Team defeated Watertown High School 3-2, to capture their second straight Sectional Title. This means the OHS Varsity Volleyball team has once again qualified for the State tournament. We are incredibly proud and would love to have as many students and families join us at the Resch Center.

OHS is scheduled to play Sun Prairie High School in the State Quarterfinals, at the Resch Center in Green Bay on Thursday, November 1, at 7:30 p.m.

The Athletic Office is offering all OHS students:
  • A $20.00 package deal for students which will include a t-shirt, ticket to the game, and a bus ride to and from the Resch Center.
  • The cost will only be $10.00 for any girl on the JV or Freshman volleyball teams.
  • Buses will leave OHS at 3:45 p.m. on November 1, and return between 11:00 p.m. and midnight.
  • Families are invited to cheer on our team at the Resch Center.
  • There will not be bus transportation for parents or the community, but an advanced ticket and t-shirt package is available!
  • Parents can purchase an $8 ticket and/or $10 t-shirt in the OHS Athletic office during school hours, between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
  • Parents should plan their own transportation and parking for the event.
  • OHS buses will drop students off at the Resch Center and parents are invited to meet us once inside.

The drive to Green Bay is long, and it will be late when the game ends, so we encourage students to take advantage of school transportation to cheer on our team.

If the team wins, they will play in the Semifinal on the evening of Friday, November 2. If they win the Semifinal, they'll play in the Championship on Saturday, November 3. We will continue to communicate details and additional transportation options as the week continues.

Congratulations! Let's show up and show off our #oconpride!

November 6 Election: School Day Procedure Changes

Dear Greenland Families,

Current and former Greenland students have been fortunate to observe civics lessons in person. Greenland has been an election polling site for many years. This year, we anticipate a high turnout at the polls, and we are taking some extra steps to minimize disruption to the school day and keep students safe.

Here is the safety plan we have developed for Election Day on Tuesday, November 6.

Pick Up and Drop Off Procedures and Parking:

  • Greenland Staff will park on the playground
  • Arrival and Dismissal Procedures will proceed as normal
  • It may be advantageous to have students take the bus or utilize the carline

  • Lunch and Recess:

  • Students will participate in indoor recesses all day
  • Hot Lunch will be served in the atrium area by the Art Room and Library
  • Students will eat in their classrooms for the day
  • Students with peanuts/nuts in their lunch will eat in an alternate location for allergy safety

  • Building Access (what doors will be open/locked):

  • The main entrance door to Greenland will operate as usual on Election Day
  • Door 4 will be open for citizens to enter to vote
  • All others doors will be secured as usual

  • Voting Entrance and Voting Area:

  • Citizens entering Greenland to vote will enter through Door 4
  • Door 4 is located in the Dixie Parking Lot
  • Citizens will line up in the hallway between the multi-purpose room and the kitchen before entering the gym to vote
  • When a citizen has completed voting, they will exit through gym Door 2

  • Other Safety Measures
  • The gate in the main hallway, by the teacher's lounge, will be closed the entire school day
  • Adults and students will only be able to gain access to classrooms by entering the office and walking in the hallway passed the Student Service's Office
  • School personnel will be stationed in the main entrance working during the school day
  • Staff will be wearing identification badges

  • Thank you for your patience as we work through this busy day at Greenland. Together, we can minimize the potential for delays and stress during the school day.

    Sincerely,

    Shannon McCaffery

Nature Hill Intermediate Social Studies Teacher Attends Monticello Teachers Institute

Nature Hill Intermediate Social Studies Teacher, Erik Jappinen, participated in a unique learning opportunity this summer. He spent a week in Virginia at the Monticello Teacher Institute, a summer fellowship program for American History teachers. This was Jappinen's second trip to Monticello, having visited last fall through the Worldstrides program. This summer's experience was much different because the Monticello Teacher Institute is an opportunity to research and study at Monticello, with a goal of enhancing classroom teaching on Thomas Jefferson's ideas and life.

During the Institute, Jappinen had the opportunity to privately tour Monticello and learn more about the lives of the enslaved people and families who lived there. He was also able to work with Monticello's lead historian and meet several of the archaeological staff working to uncover relics and better understand life at the site. The highlights of the week included:

    • The opportunity for fellows to talk with noted Jefferson historian, Peter Onuf, via Skype.
    • Access to the University of Virginia Special Collections Library, where Jappinen saw one of the 25 original printings of the Declaration of Independence and a copy of Notes on the State of Virginia, which Thomas Jefferson gave to the Marquis de Lafayette with personal inscription.

In addition to their time at Monticello, the fellows also toured Highland, the home of the fifth president, James Monroe, and the University of Virginia's Rotunda and Academical Village, both designed by Thomas Jefferson.

At the end of the weeklong Institute, Jappinen created a lesson plan that will be added to the Monticello Digital Classroom, an online resource for teachers across the country to enhance their classroom teaching on Thomas Jefferson. His lesson plan was a review and interpretation of the significant correspondence between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams over the course of their public lives. In many ways, their correspondence mirrored the growth and changes that the country was experiencing. "I had the opportunity to work with fifteen other teachers from across the country as we studied aspects of Thomas Jefferson's ideas and life. I also, and more importantly, learned a lot about someone that I believed I already knew," said Jappinen. "I would highly encourage all teachers to search out these types of immersive professional development opportunities. I met fifteen incredible educators and three terrific leaders from Monticello who I hope will continue to impact my teaching and learning. It was so rewarding," said Jappinen about his experience.

Last week, Oconomowoc High School DECA held their first Principals of Marketing mini-competition. The mini-competition was created to give new DECA members a sample of the competition atmosphere and to provide a mentorship opportunity for the Junior and Senior DECA members who have competed before. New members were teamed with experienced members, then presented with their business situation. Teams had 10 minutes to review the situation and plan their group presentation, before presenting to a judge. The teams were then judged on how well they delivered their presentation, their understanding of the situation, and how well they accounted for factors like supply and demand, their business environment, and the goods and services in their scenario. DECA member, Sarah L. said, "even though this was our first event, it turned out so good! We had so many members share with us how helpful it was and how they all plan to participate in the real competition in January." Thank you for our OHS faculty advisors, student mentors, and volunteer judges who supported this great learning opportunity!

Last week, the design team from Tim O'Brien Homes visited the Oconomowoc High School Civil Engineering & Architecture class. These designers came to work with our students on the homes they're designing using the architecture software, Autodesk Revit. Students started their projects with criteria set by Tim O'Brien Homes and this was their first opportunity to share their designs and receive feedback. Each student met with several of the designers and talked about space layout and functionality, ideas and questions they had, and got valuable tips for improving their design. Teacher Mark Jappinen said, "the students really enjoyed and valued the experience. The goal is to one day have the CEA class design the home that our Building Trades 3 class builds with Tim O'Brien Homes the following fall." Thank you to Tim O'Brien Homes and the designers who worked with our students. We can't hide our #oconpride for this unique project!

Through the generosity of the Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, First Bank Financial Center, and ProHealth Care, the Oconomowoc Area School District has received 9 Bleeding Control Kits. The kits were created through a program called "Stop the Bleed" which seeks to strengthen training and availability of medical supplies in an injury or massive bleeding situation. A Bleeding Control Pack will be available at each OASD school and district medical response staff will receive training to use the supplies.

From the First Bank Financial Centre Press Release:

The "Stop the Bleed" campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff and The White House. The purpose of the campaign is to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters.

"At ProHealth Care, we strive to be the health care leader in Waukesha County by providing outstanding care across a full spectrum of services," said Sarah Butz, ProHealth Care Director, Community Benefit. "Those services may expand beyond our facilities, and supporting this initiative in our schools is an excellent example of that outreach."

Mark W. Mohr, President and CEO of First Bank Financial Centre, added, "Oconomowoc has been our home for nearly 160 years. It's an honor to support our schools in a variety of ways, and this initiative is a potentially life-saving program for our kids and teachers."

The campaign includes medical training and provides kits filled with supplies to be used in an emergency. Each kit includes a tourniquet, permanent marker, trauma dressing, gauze, two pairs of gloves, shears/scissors, and an instruction card.

"For the third straight year the District has seen continued growth on the state report card, and this year five of our schools achieved their highest score since the inception of the report card. OCONOMOWOC, WI- November 14, 2018. WSPRA presented the Spectrum Awards at its recent annual conference, Nov. 7-9, in Madison, Wis. The OASD earned an Award of Excellence for its 2015-16 Annual Report, Learners and Leaders Community Newsletter, and the Oconomowoc High School Programming Brochures.

Spectrum Awards recognize high-quality public relations efforts produced by or on behalf of Wisconsin school districts. This year, this statewide competition honored 42 school districts with awards.

WSPRA's Spectrum Awards are judged by members of other school public relations associations throughout the United States, including from Illinois, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, and South Carolina. All entries were judged on a 30-point scale in six areas: goals and objectives, research and planning, execution and evaluation, results, language, and design.

Every Family at Park Lawn Elementary School Has a Story

This year's theme for our Oconomowoc Area School District (OASD) School Board presentations is Every Student Has a Story. The teachers and staff at Park Lawn Elementary School work hard every day to understand each student's story, but also know how important it is to understand each family's story too.

At the November 13, 2018, OASD School Board meeting, Park Lawn Elementary Principal Jennifer Jones was joined by the LePage family and Park Lawn staff members, Laura Schleicher, Taryn Trost, Samantha Speich, and Becky Scheltz. The group came together to share their story of academic variability within a family and how that mirrors the academic variability that our teachers strive to address each day. Mrs. Jones introduced the LePage family and shared the strengths of each student – Sam, who is in sixth grade and is gifted in math; Sophia, who is in first grade and talented in art and creative expression; and Gabe, who is gifted in reading and is a child with autism.

Kindergarten teacher, Taryn Trost, and Learning Strategist, Samantha Speich, shared some of the tools they use to ensure the curriculum is meeting the needs of all the students in their classroom. They specifically shared some of the tools and approaches they created to ensure Gabe's academic needs are met.

The team emphasized the crucial role of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in their efforts to proactively plan and tackle barriers for learners, instead of waiting for a learning barrier to occur. Principal Jones said, "Thank goodness we have the kind of common planning time that our teachers have, that we have professional development opportunities where our teachers can collaborate and learn and grow together, so that they can learn about the students and plan the necessary action steps that they need, so they can meet that variability academically."

4K Teacher, Laura Schleicher, talked about teaching Sophia and Gabe and the changes she needed to make in her approach. She also worked closely with Samantha Speich to design the right curriculum for both students, adding, "We also planned a lot. Things that worked, things that we needed to fix, we talked on a daily basis and constantly were collaborating."

Mrs. Jones concluded the presentation by saying, "It's nearly impossible to predict the combination of strengths and weaknesses any student will possess. The flexibility of presentation, materials, and the physical environment allow for a wider range of access for all students."

You're invited to a screening of the documentary, Suicide, The Ripple Effect, at the Oconomowoc Arts Center on Tuesday, September 25, 2018.

Photo of Kevin Hines from the documentary Suicide, The Ripple Effect

The documentary highlights the journey of Kevin Hines, who at age 19 attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge, the film follows Kevin on a mission to help others stay alive and find recovery. In the Oconomowoc community, statistics reveal concerns around the issue of suicide as well. In spring of 2017, Oconomowoc High School students took the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) that revealed startling statistics. The percentage of students who seriously considered attempting suicide in the last 12 months was 13.3—that's 160 students.

We hope this film sheds light on this topic and offers hope to all that may be touched by suicide.
