Superintendent Update for the week ending April 7, 2017

The OASD wishes everyone a fun and safe Spring Break!  The district will be closed April 10-14, 2017.  We will see everyone’s smiling faces back at school on Monday, April 17.


The 4th Annual Roots 5K-12 Art Show runs April 6-17, 2017.  There will be over 50 pieces of OASD student art work on display at Roots Coffeebar & Café.  Be sure to stop by over break to see the showcased talent of our students!

 

Congratulations to the OASD for earning a Top 10 Technology Award (2016-17) from the Center for Digital Education!  This marks the seventh time the district has earned a top ten ranking among mid-size school districts for innovative use of technology district-wide.  

 

Buildings & Grounds Seasonal Positions Available:  The OASD Buildings & Grounds Department has Season Custodian positions open for June 12- August 25, 2017.  The positions are Monday- Friday, and 20 hours a week with work times from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (some hours/times may vary).  Pay is $10/hour.  To apply please visit WECAN and send your application to Vacancy #4349.  Click here to download flyer.


Help Park Lawn Elementary win The Pack’er up Challenge. Purge it, pack it, and donate it!  The Pack’er Up Donation Challenge through Goodwill runs from April 1-30 and allows an elementary or a middle school a chance to have All-time Leading Wide Receiver and World Champion Donald Drive visit their school. Let’s all help Park Lawn win this challenge!  Just drop off items at any Goodwill in Southeastern Wisconsin, tell them the number of items you are donating and that Park Lawn Elementary in Oconomowoc sent you.  Click here for photos.

 

SAVE THE DATE/ REGISTER:  Join the Park Lawn Panthers on Saturday, May 20, 2017, for their 2nd Annual Oconomowoc Panther Dash 5K/10K Run Walk.  This chip timed event is part of the March 2 November Race Series.  Included in your registration is a performance race shirt and custom finisher’s medal.  All proceeds from this event will go to Park Lawn Elementary school to upgrade classroom electronics and the Oconomowoc Food Pantry!  Click here for more information and to register.

 

SAVE THE DATE/REGISTER:  Please join the Summit and Silver Lake School Communities for the "In It for Isaac" family fun run and walk on May 13, 2017.  This event is open to the public and welcome to participate. "In It for Isaac" is being organized to help the family of Isaac Freeland with medical costs.  Isaac was diagnosed with leukemia in the spring of 2016, and is a 3rd grader at Summit Elementary.  His older brother Gabe is in the 7th grade at Silver Lake Intermediate. Oconomowoc High School
Congratulations to OHS Art and Design students who participated in the year’s Pewaukee Area Arts Council Showcase of Art!  Olivia Harwood, Ian Smith, and Anna Reinhard have their artwork currently on display at the Waukesha Public Library until April 27.  Anna Reinhard received two awards at the event for her ceramic work, 2nd place overall, and the coveted people’s choice award!

 

On Saturday, April 1, 2017, OHS senior Lola Defever placed 2nd in the Non-Heritage High School Intermediate Level at the Wisconsin Chinese Speech Contest held at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.

 

The 2017 Lake Country Film Festival is complete! What a stunning display of talent and artistic elegance. It was very difficult for the audience to make decisions due to the level of film quality this year! We also hope this inspires other students to submit films for the 2018 Lake Country Film Festival.  Next year’s event will take place April 13-14, 2018. Thank you to all staff and administrators for encouraging your students to get involved in such a dynamic and widespread event! Click here for the list of this year’s winners!     

 

The OHS Spanish Honor Society recently did a Colectivo Coffee fundraiser to raise money for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. The group raised a total of $2,200. Click here for a photo.

 

OHS senior Elliot Spear, a member of the OHS DECA Leadership team, will be leading the “Muscle Walk” on Sunday, April 30 at the Milwaukee Zoo to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  The OHS DECA Chapter is helping raise awareness, recruit OHS friends, family, and staff to walk, and to raise donations for “Elliot’s Green Machine.”  Those who sign up to walk by Monday, April 17 will get a free “Elliot’s Green Machine” T-shirt and Elliot’s dad will donate $1 for every student or staff member who walks at the zoo on Sunday, April 30. Click here to join Elliot’s team and to donate.

 

OHS GAPP Fundraiser:  Looking for easy ways to help our district students? The OHS 2017 German-American Partnership Program (GAPP) Exchange Program has partnered with a local business to earn funds for their programs.  Schwefel’s will donate between 15% and 25% on April 22-23, and April 28-29.

 


Athletics

OHS VARSITY BASEBALL:  The Oconomowoc Varsity Baseball team began their 2017 season with a 5-2 victory at Waterford on April 1.  They begin their Wisconsin Little Ten Conference play at Arrowhead High School on April 4.

 

OHS VARSITY SOFTBALL:  The Lady Raccoons hosted Madison Memorial in a nonconference game on March 31 and rolled in a 7-1 victory.  Click here to read full article.

 

OHS TRACK AND FIELD:  OHS Boys Track and Field placed 13th out of 28 teams with 21.5 points at the Madison West Relays on April 1, 2017.  Click here to read full article.

 

OHS VARSITY SOCCER:  Oconomowoc and Mukwonago faced off in a nonconference match on Mukwonago’s turf field April 4 and battled to a scoreless tie.  Click here to read full article.

 

OHS BOYS TENNIS:  The Varsity Boys Tennis team traveled up to Green Bay this past weekend for their first matches of the 2017 season.  They had the opportunity to face off against the best team in Wisconsin and last year’s State Champions Marquette University High School, and two of the top division 2 schools in Wisconsin, Catholic Memorial High and Brookfield Academy.  Although the team went 0-3, they had a great start to the season.  Up next, the team will be a host site for the Waukesha South Invite on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 where we will take on Pius XI, Madison West, Waukesha West, and Germantown.  Click here for individual match results from the weekend.  

 

OHS DANCE TEAM:  The OHS Dance team is a competitive and spirit dance team.  Team members are scholar athletes who represent both the school and the community in a positive light.  Tryouts for the 2017-18 school year will be held on May 8-11, and an informational meeting will be held on April 24.

 

OHS CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS:  The OHS Cheerleading team will hold an informational meeting on April 5 at 7 p.m. in the OHS Main Cafeteria.  Tryouts will be held April 17-21, 2017, from 5-7:30 p.m. in the OHS Upper Gym.
